Beautiful Bees
Allow me to unveil the fascinating realm of bees. With over 20,000 distinct species across the globe, these incredible miniature heroes have much to boast about. They are classified into three primary categories: Honey Bees, Bumblebees, and Solitary Bees, each offering us a myriad of gifts, not least their essential contribution to pollinating roughly a third of the world's food supply.
In this section, we focus on Apis Mellifera, commonly known as the Western Honey Bee.
Honey Bee Facts
The honey bee thrives in a sizable colony that can comprise around 60,000 bees, typically including one Queen (female), numerous workers (also female), and drones (male). The population of the colony fluctuates throughout the year, increasing during the spring and summer months and dwindling in autumn and winter. The Queen, slightly larger than other bees, primarily lays eggs and releases her pheromones to maintain the colony's well-being. The worker bees, all female, manage the colony and collaborate to determine the best course of action for its welfare. Their roles and job titles within the hive vary according to their age. Generally, the lifespan of a worker bee is about 5 to 6 weeks during the active foraging season and can extend to around 6 months in winter. They possess a barbed stinger capable of delivering venom that may lead to fatal anaphylactic shock. Drones, the male bees, are equipped with large eyes for spotting queens during mating flights. They depend on food from others, do not participate in foraging, and are expelled from the hive in autumn. Drones tend to be broader and chunkier than worker bees and lack a stinger.

Help Nature
Bees and other pollinators in many parts of the world are under threat and their numbers are declining according to several researches. There is evidence that Honeybee numbers and other pollinators have fallen and are less abundant than they have been. There are several possible causes including pest and diseases, loss of habitat as well as possible Climate change disruptions which are causing disruptions to weather patterns and seasons.
Why Are Bee’s Important?
During recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the important service bees and other beneficial insects give through pollinating many agricultural and horticultural crops as well as wild flora. The value of honey bees as a pollinator far outweighs their value as honey producers and the UK’s crop pollination industry has an estimated value that is greater than £400 million every year!
